Time in International Olympiad History!! U.S. Four-Member
Team -- Four Gold Medals
Vienna, Virginia, July 19, 2004—In an unprecedented
feat of accomplishment in the 15 years of the International
Biology Olympiad Competition, the USA Team will bring home
four Gold medals. According to the Center for Excellence
in Education – sponsor of the USA Biology Olympiad – no
nation, including the U.S., has previously attained such
extraordinary success.
This is the second year of U.S. participation in the International
competition. Approximately 160 students representing 40 countries
competed in this rigorous competition in Australia.
The Gold Medalists are:
- Katherine Aull, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, Virginia
- Bradford Hargreaves, Caddo Parish Magnet High School, Shreveport,Louisiana
- Clinton Hansen, Oneida High School, Oneida, New York
- ZeNan Chang, Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica, California

“We are delighted at the performance of the U.S. students.
The competition was very intense, and our U.S. Team performed beyond our expectations.
Bringing home four gold medals attests to the strength and success of the training of
this nation’s best and brightest,” says Joann DiGennaro, President of the Center for Excellence in Education.
Dr. Alan Christensen of George Mason University and Dr. William Stuart of the
University of Maryland, who served as U.S. Team Coaches, observed,
“These kids are extraordinarily motivated and refreshingly diverse in
intellectual style. As tomorrow’s scholars and leaders in biology, they will
be honing the competitive edge of the future of biological sciences.”
