USABO Teacher Information

1. USABO requires the following information upon registration:

  • Teacher's primary email address (school email address).
  • Optional: Teacher's secondary email address (personal email address).
  • Principal's or vice-Principal's contact information and email.
  • School address, phone, fax, general email.
  • Certification that all students who participate in the competition meet the eligibility requirements.

To complete the registration, a one time registration fee of $75.00 per school per academic cycle must be paid by check or credit card. Access to the open examination will not be available until payment has been received in the CEE office.


In order to ensure a fair and honest competition, USABO will verify each registered school and teacher.


2. USABO will assign each registered school an ID number prior to the Open Exam

  • All teachers within a school will use the same teacher ID number.
  • Student ID numbers are assigned individually by the teachers.
  • Prior to the USABO Open Exam, school IDs and instructions will be provided to registered teachers.
  • Teachers of students qualifying as semi-finalists will retain the same school ID number but receive a new password for the semi-final exam.
  • Teachers can view results only for their school.


3. Documention for test security and eligibility (Must be returned with exams or they will not be scored.)

  • USABO requires that all students sign and date their exam to certify their identity, acknowledge their participation in the USABO, and pledge that they have followed the rules of the competition.
  • A teacher will certify that s/he administered the exam according to the rules of the competition and has verified the identity of those students taking the exam.
  • Students must certify that they are citizens or legal permanent residents of the U.S.


4. The Semifinal Exam is administered to the top 500 of those taking the Open Exam.

  • The score necessary to become a semifinalist is posted on the Teacher Resource Center.
  • Histograms of the score distribution are posted on the Teacher Resource Center.
  • Only the individual teacher has access to individual student scores.
  • All semifinalists receive a certificate, and we encourage schools to distribute certificates during an honors night.
  • All teachers of the semifinalists receive a certificate honoring their efforts for excellence.


5. Selection to the USABO National Finals is based upon the Semifinal Exam score.

The top 20 students are selected without regard to race, ethnicity, gender or religious affiliation. If a top 20 participant is unable to attend the National Finals s/he forfeits the award and number 21 is selected for the top 20.


6.The National Finalists must:

  • Attend the International Biology Olympiad if selected for the team.
  • Not participate in any other 2010 International Olympiad.
  • Adhere to all the rules and regulations governing the International Biology Olympiad.
  • Provide proof of US citizenship or legal permanent residency.


7. The four gold medal winners for the USABO Finals become the International Biology Olympiad Team for the United States.
