CEE’s Annual Congressional Luncheon to Recognize STEM Leaders

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman Will Present Awards for Outstanding
Achievement in STEM

McLean, VA (March 19, 2021) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) will host its Annual Congressional Luncheon on Zoom on Thursday, April 8 from Noon-2 p.m. ET. The luncheon will bring together luminaries in the public and private sectors, friends of CEE, and alumni of the Center’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs to hear Honorary Trustees who are Congressional members and program alumni speak about the importance of science and technology.

The 2021 Senator Joseph I. Lieberman Awardees for Outstanding STEM Achievement will be presented by Senator Lieberman to:

    Mark Kantrowitz   Mark Kantrowitz, a 1984 alumnus of CEE’s Research Science Institute, is President of Cerebly, Inc. He is a nationally-recognized expert on student financial aid, scholarships, college savings plans and student loans. His mission is to deliver practical information, advice and tools to students and their families for them to make informed decisions about planning and paying for college. He earned Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and philosophy from MIT and a Master of Science degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
    Lauren K. Williams   Lauren K. Williams, a 1994 alumnus of CEE’s Research Science Institute, is Dwight Parker Robinson Professor of Mathematics at Harvard and Sally Starling Seaver Professor at the Radcliffe Institute. She is known for her work in algebraic combinatorics, in particular in total positivity, cluster algebras, and tropical geometry. She earned an A.B. in mathematics from Harvard University and her PhD in 2005 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her dissertation was titled Combinatorial Aspects of Total Positivity. 

    “Both Mark and Lauren are exemplary models of students supported by the Center’s programs. The Center is honored that these outstanding ‘Rickoids’ are the recipients of the Senator Joseph Lieberman Award,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President.

    The Lieberman Award includes a $10,000 stipend from CEE. The award acknowledges significant STEM and business accomplishments and recognizes Senator Lieberman’s longtime support as a CEE Trustee.

    “The Center’s amazing alumni and their significant contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are helping to assure future U.S. scientific and technological leadership in the global community,” said Ms. DiGennaro.
