CEE and Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Host Dinner Event to
Strengthen Science Teaching
McLean, VA – September 09, 2013 – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC-Crane) will host a Bite of Science dinner event for high school teachers at WestGate Academy located at 13598 East WestGate Drive in Odon, Indiana. Scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, 2013, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., science teachers will broaden their perspective of science in the classroom.
The mission of the Teacher Enrichment Program is to assure a future talented and diverse U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program focuses on best practices and resources, as well as exposure to the breadth and depth of scientific discovery often not available to rural and urban high school teachers and their students. The Bite of Science professional development session for teachers is estimated to impact at least 3,400 Daviess, Martin and Greene County students in 2013.
The Teacher Enrichment Program provides content and information for teachers to engage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Bite of Science is one of six components offered by the Teacher Enrichment Program.
The components of the Teacher Enrichment Program are as follows:
Bite of Science
This opportunity brings together 25 teachers with two leading scientists and/or engineers. Teachers have the opportunity to interact with researchers from industry, academia, and government.
Lab Bench
Interactive website that includes the Bite of Science (BOS) presentations and videos, supplementary resources related to BOS topics, additional STEM resources, targeted content from the Clearinghouse, laboratory activities, and resources for students.
Clearinghouse
The Clearinghouse is an online compendium of science resources within targeted states. Teachers can access more than 2,200 content rich STEM sites gathered for Life Science, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space sciences, Mathematics, Technology and Engineering classes at the secondary school level. The Clearinghouse is available cost free to any teacher and all content listed is free to access and use in the classroom.
CEE Blog
The CEE Blog serves to encourage discussion about education issues among STEM stakeholders in the global community. U.S. and international scientists contribute content and abstracts to the blog.
Teacher Roundtables
These events are hosted by CEE for science teachers to discuss critical science and laboratory education. These meetings serve to share ideas among teachers, including resources and classroom pedagogy.
Public/Private Partnerships
CEE works with companies, academic institutions, foundations, agencies, education organizations, and academic community groups to create and strengthen public/private partnerships to better serve urban and rural STEM teachers and their students.

The goals of the Teacher Enrichment Program are to:
- Provide teachers with enhanced professional development
- Furnish the opportunity for teachers to ask questions and to interact directly with scientists and engineers
- Foster excitement in teachers to create an interest for students to pursue STEM careers
- Allow teachers the opportunity to network with their peers
