McLean, VA (April 9, 2020) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is proud to announce that two Research Science Institute (RSI) alumni have earned distinctive awards.

Nicole Nova, RSI ’07, Ph.D. Candidate, Ecology & Evolution, at Mordecai Lab & Petrov Lab, Department of Biology, Stanford University, has received the P.E.O. Scholar Award. Dr. Terence Tao, RSI ’89, a world renowned mathematician based at the University of California in Los Angeles, has been announced as the first recipient of the Riemann Prize in Mathematics, awarded by the Riemann International School of Mathematics (RISM).

“I am so proud of these RSI Alumni,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President. “They personify excellence in STEM.”

The P.E.O. Scholar Awards program was established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women of the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university. More information is here.

The Riemann Prize was established in 2019, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of RISM. Along with RISM, its co-sponsors include all public and private universities of Lombardia, the government of Regione Lombardia, and the municipality of Varese, Italy. More information is here.

For the past 36 years, RSI has provided students with the opportunity to conduct original, cutting-edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities in Boston and Cambridge, MA. The heart of RSI is the five-week research internship where students conduct individual projects under the tutelage of mentors who are experienced scientists and researchers. RSI is cost-free for students to attend. The RSI is collaboratively sponsored with MIT.
