The Center for Excellence in Education launched the National Lab Skills Initiative with a thought provoking and stimulating symposium April 8-9, 2010. Influential members of the STEM community gathered to review several exemplary models of laboratory education and discuss how these models can be used throughout the U.S. to improve laboratory experiences for secondary students and teachers.

CEE held an exciting panel discussion with Dr. Jan Cuny, Program Director of Broadening Participation in Computing at the National Science Foundation, Mr. Michael Lach, Special Assistant for Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education, and Dr. Susan Rundell Singer, Laurence McKinley Gould Professor of the Natural Sciences in the Department of Biology at Carleton College. The discussion focused on current and future STEM education policy in the United States. A dynamic Q&A session followed, which allowed the audience to begin the conversation about ways to improve laboratory experiences in this nation’s secondary schools.

Commendations were given at the luncheon on April 9th to the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative, the Biogen Idec Community Lab, the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago’s Institute for Quality Science Teaching, NASA Explorer Schools, Partnership for Research and Education in Plants, and UTeach. Dr. Noreen Hynes, Director of the Geographic Medicine Center in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, delivered the keynote address and passionately discussed the importance of encouraging and fostering STEM learning at an early age.
