Annual Capitol Hill Luncheon
The Center for Excellence in Education’s exciting Annual Capitol Hill Luncheon sponsored by General Dynamics and Purdue Pharma was held on May 9, 2012 for approximately 125 supporters and friends of the Center. The annual luncheon held at the Dirksen Senate Office Building celebrated the success of the Center’s Research Science Institute (RSI), offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO), collaboratively sponsored with Purdue University; and the Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP) to assure a talented and diverse U.S. workforce. The event also highlighted the success of the alumni from the RSI and USABO programs.
Speakers at the luncheon included CEE Honorary Board Member Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT) along with Representatives Judy Biggert (IL), James McGovern (MA), and Randy Hultgren (IL).
The Center honored Senator Joseph Lieberman with a special tribute for his eighteen years of service as a CEE Honorary Board Member. He has championed CEE’s mission to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage international collaboration between and among leaders in the global community.
RSI Alumni Dr. Shamik Das (1995) and Jonece Layne (2011) spoke of the uniqueness of the Research Science Institute, laboratory research, lasting friendships with fellow classmates, fond memories, accomplishments, and future goals.
