CEE Announces Scholars of the 28th Research Science Institute

MIT Hosting Seventy-Seven Top Achieving RSI Scholars for Six Weeks

McLean, VA June 15, 2011- The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) has named 47 top achieving U.S. scholars, three of whom are Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) scholars, and 30 scholars from other nations that will attend the 28th annual Research Science Institute (RSI), jointly sponsored with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). RSI is the Center’s flagship program and is the most acclaimed national and international enrichment program of its kind, providing countless opportunities for high school students who show great scientific and technological promise.

The RSI program is offered cost-free by CEE to competitively selected top achieving students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). RSI scholars will participate from June 19th through July 30th in college-level research under the mentorship of leading scientists and researchers in the Boston area. RSI is a six week intensive program that provides students with the opportunity to conduct original, cutting edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities.

The students, dubbed “Rickoids” after the late Admiral H.G. Rickover, father of the nuclear Navy and founder of the Center with CEE President Joann DiGennaro, are chosen solely on the basis of academic merit.

The 2011 Research Science Institute will be directed by Dr. Andrew Charman, former RSI’86 alumnus and staff member at the University of California, Berkeley. The future leaders in STEM will be taught at RSI by leading professors that include:

  • Dr. Steven Leeb of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Engineering
  • Dr. Forrest Michael of the University of Washington - Chemistry
  • Dr. Sean Mulholland of Stonehill College -Economics
  • Mr. Lance Rhoades of the University of Washington – Humanities
  • Dr. Rebekah Rogers of University of California, Irvine – Biology
  • Dr. Christopher Skinner of Princeton University - Math
  • Dr. Sam Waldman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Physics

“RSI allows young scholars to experience the world of graduate level research which propels them to new levels of academic achievement,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President. “CEE is proud to announce that RSI has nearly 2000 successful alumni with almost an 80% STEM career retention rate.”

RSI scholars will also participate in the highly acclaimed RSI Distinguished Lecture Series which features Nobel Laureates and prominent STEM representatives. RSI will also inaugurate an economics component to the curriculum. This will complement the components of pure and applied mathematics, physical and biological science, and humanities.

This year RSI will host scholars from Australia, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain and Sweden with U.S. students.
