CEE to Host Webinar of STEM in Oceanography

McLean, Va. (May 11, 2023) – The Center for Excellence in Education’s (CEE) Teacher Enrichment Program presents a cost-free online seminar about career opportunities in oceanography. This virtual program takes place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, 5:00-6:15 p.m. ET via Zoom. Register online.

Distinguished speakers:

Amanda Felix is Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium Biologist, based in Sarasota, Florida. Amanda provides care for several aquarium exhibits and co-manages the Fish and Invertebrate Department's intern program. She is a contributing member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Diversity Committee. She strives to build upon Mote's initiatives and models to increase participation and retention of underrepresented minorities in marine research and aquarium science.

George I. Matsumoto, PhD, Senior Education & Research Specialist, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. He earned an A.B. in Marine Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and he earned his PhD at UCLA. During his final year at UCB he became certified as a scientific diver, which has had a huge influence on his career. He studied gelatinous zooplankton for his degree using SCUBA, human occupied vehicles, and remotely operated vehicles around the world to collect specimens and observations.

CEE’s Teacher Enrichment Program provides unique STEM opportunities for high school teachers and their students. All TEP resources and professional development events are cost-free to participants. To date, more than 4,000 teachers from over 1,400 schools have participated. The program has reached nearly 600,000 underserved rural and urban students to encourage STEM careers.
