McLean, Va. (April 15, 2022) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) will celebrate World DNA Day with “The Rhythm of Life: Genomic Regulation of the Circadian Rhythm,” a free webinar on Monday, April 25, 2022, 6-7:00 p.m. ET via Zoom. Experts will discuss how the circadian rhythm is regulated and how it impacts human health. Registrants will also learn cutting-edge lab techniques used to study genomics. Registration is open to all interested. View the recording on YouTube.

Distinguished speakers include:

Michelle Gumz, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, Hypertension, and Renal Transplantation in the Department of Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Florida. Dr. Gumz is interested in the clinical implications of circadian rhythms in human health, particularly kidney function. The Gumz Laboratory is focusing on the regulation of sodium transport in the kidney, which is critical to the control of blood pressure as well as to overall cardiovascular health. She earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Florida.

Christopher Hopkins, Ph.D., is an Executive Sequencing Specialist at Illumina. Dr. Hopkins’ background is in molecular biology, assay development, genomics, microarrays, and DNA sequencing. He has held research, assay development, and commercial positions at several technology-based companies.  Dr. Hopkins loves learning and talking about science and genomics.  He earned a B.A. in Biochemistry-Molecular Biology from UC Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Kansas State University. He was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley.

About the Center for Excellence in Education

CEE, a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center’s mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI), USA Biolympiad (USABO), Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), and STEM Lyceums. CEE programs are provided cost-free to participating students and teachers. The Center works closely with educational institutions, private foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals. For more information, visit www.cee.org.
