McLean, Va. (May 27, 2022) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is pleased to announce that Dr. Lauren Ancel Meyers, a 1990 alumna of CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI), has been elected to a six-year term on Harvard University’s Board of Overseers.

“Lauren personifies excellence professionally and personally,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President. “The Center is so proud of her continued achievements.”

Dr. Meyers is the Cooley Centennial Professor of Integrative Biology and Statistics & Data Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin and a member of the Santa Fe Institute External Faculty. She received a BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Harvard University and a PhD in Mathematical Biology from Stanford University. She has been a pioneer in the field of network epidemiology and the application of machine learning to improve outbreak detection, forecasting and control. Professor Meyers leads an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and public health experts in uncovering the social and biological drivers of epidemics and building practical tools for the CDC and other global health agencies to track and mitigate emerging viral threats, including COVID-19, pandemic influenza, Ebola, HIV, and Zika. Her research has been published in over 100 peer-reviewed articles in major journals and covered by the popular press. Professor Meyers was named as one of the top 100 global innovators under age 35 by the MIT Technology Review in 2004 and received CEE’s Joseph Lieberman Award in 2017 for significant contributions to science.

About the Center for Excellence in Education

CEE, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center’s mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI), USA Biolympiad (USABO), Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), and STEM Lyceums. CEE programs are provided cost-free to participating students and teachers. The Center works closely with educational institutions, private foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals. For more information, visit www.cee.org.

About Research Science Institute

CEE’s RSI is a summer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program collaboratively sponsored with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that combines on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research. Students conduct original, cutting-edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals, and corporate research facilities. Students make oral and written presentations based on their research during the last week of the program. RSI is offered at no cost to all students competitively selected to attend. More information is at https://www.cee.org/research-science-institute.
