McLean, VA (August 27, 2021) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is pleased to announce that Jonathan Gootenberg, PhD (USA Biolympiad ’08, ’09) and David Rolnick, PhD (RSI ’07) have made MIT Technology Review’s prestigious list of Innovators Under 35.

“Jonathan and David both personify excellence,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President. “The Center is so proud of their exemplary accomplishments.”

Jonathan Gootenberg is a McGovern Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he draws from fundamental microbiology to engineer new molecular tools. These tools, including the popular genome editing system CRISPR, allow for unprecedented manipulation and profiling of cellular states in the body, and have multiple applications in basic science, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Dr. Gootenberg earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biological engineering at MIT and received his PhD in Systems Biology from Harvard University. He is one of the first members of the McGovern Institute Fellows program, which supports the transition to independent research for exceptional recent PhD graduates. Dr. Gootenberg recently appeared as a panelist on CEE’s webinar, “Unraveling DNA: The World of Genomics.” View the recording here.

David Rolnick is Assistant Professor of Computer Science at McGill University, a Core Member and Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Mila Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, and he serves as co-founder and chair of Climate Change AI and scientific co-director of Sustainability in the Digital Age. His research foci are applications of machine learning to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, as well as deep learning theory as it relates to mathematical understanding of the properties of neural networks. He earned a B.S. in mathematics at MIT and was a Fulbright Scholar at the Freie Universität Berlin. He was an NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from MIT.

Both honorees will be featured at the upcoming EmTech MIT conference, MIT Technology Review’s flagship event to be held online September 28-30, 2021.
