McLean, Va. (April 10, 2023)  The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) will host its Annual Congressional Luncheon on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The luncheon will bring together luminaries in the public and private sectors, friends of CEE, and alumni of the Center’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs to hear CEE’s Honorary Trustees, Congressional members, and program alumni speak about the importance of science and technology.

The keynote speaker is Jonathan Gardner, PhD, Deputy Senior Project Scientist for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, which looks backwards in time to find the first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang. The project traces their evolution into galaxies like our own Milky Way and connects the formation of stars and planets with the history of our own Solar System.

The 2023 Joseph I. Lieberman Award for Outstanding Achievement in STEM will be presented to Dr. Aaron S. Kesselheim, MD, JD, MPH, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and a faculty member in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He attended CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI) in 1991.

The Lieberman Award acknowledges significant STEM accomplishments by an alumnus of CEE’s programs and recognizes Senator Lieberman’s longtime support as a CEE Honorary Trustee.

CEE Honorary Trustees U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (Nevada), U.S. Senator Todd Young (Indiana), U.S. Representative Neal Dunn (Florida), and U.S. Representative Scott Peters (California) will provide remarks.

“This exciting event brings together the Centers amazing alumni, donors, and friends to spotlight how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is helping to assure future U.S. scientific and technological leadership in the global community,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE’s President.

About the Center for Excellence in Education

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center’s mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI), USA Biolympiad (USABO), Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), and STEM Lyceums. CEE programs are provided cost-free to participating students and teachers, thereby leveling the playing field for economically disadvantaged students.
