Dr. Aaron S. Kesselheim Selected for Lieberman Award for Outstanding Achievement in STEM

McLean, Va. (March 22, 2023) -- The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) excellence through national and international programs for students and teachers, announces the 2023 Joseph I. Lieberman Awardee for Outstanding STEM Achievement.

Dr. Aaron S. Kesselheim, MD, JD, MPH, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and a faculty member in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He attended CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI) in 1991.

Dr. Kesselheim developed and leads the Program On Regulation, Therapeutics, And Law, one of the largest non-industry funded academic research centers in the country that focuses on pharmaceutical policy and evidence-based use of medicines. Author of over 600 publications in peer-reviewed medical and health policy literatures, Dr. Kesselheim was recognized as one of the top 3 most cited health law scholars in the US from 2013-2020 in Web of Science, Westlaw, and GoogleScholar. Dr. Kesselheim has testified before Congress on pharmaceutical policy, medical device regulation, generic drugs, and modernizing clinical trials. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. In 2020, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

“Aaron is an exemplary model of students supported by the Center’s programs. The Center is honored that this outstanding RSI program alumnus is the recipient of the Senator Joseph Lieberman Award,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. “He has continued to lend his expertise to participation in many CEE programmatic activities.”

The Lieberman Award includes a $10,000 gift. The award acknowledges significant STEM and business accomplishments and recognizes Senator Lieberman's longtime support as a CEE Honorary Trustee.

The award will be presented by Senator Lieberman at CEE’s Annual Congressional Luncheon on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. This luncheon celebrates 40 years of success by CEE’s impactful STEM education programs: Research Science Institute, USA Biolympiad, Teacher Enrichment Program, and STEM Lyceums.

“The Center’s amazing alumni and their significant contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) initiatives are helping to assure future U.S. leadership in the global community,” said DiGennaro.
