McLean, Va. (March 23, 2023) The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) excellence through national and international programs for students and teachers, announces that Dr. Jonathan Gardner will deliver the keynote address at CEE’s Annual Congressional Luncheon on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

Dr. Gardner is Deputy Senior Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, which looks backwards in time to find the first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang. The project traces their evolution into galaxies like our own Milky Way and connects the formation of stars and planets with the history of our own Solar System.

Dr. Gardner received an AB degree from Harvard and MS and PhD from the University of Hawaii. As a NATO Fellow, he did postdoctoral research at the University of Durham in the UK. He came to NASA-Goddard in 1996 to work with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, shortly before its launch and installation on Hubble in early 1997. On the Webb project, he collaborates with the other scientists to ensure the scientific success of the mission, now coming to fruition with Webb’s early results. He previously served as the Chief of the Laboratory for Observational Cosmology in the Astrophysics Science Division of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

CEE’s Annual Congressional Luncheon celebrates 40 years of success by CEE’s impactful STEM education programs: Research Science Institute, USA Biolympiad, Teacher Enrichment Program, and STEM Lyceums. CEE has nearly 3,000 Research Science Institute alumni, has engaged thousands of USA Biolympiad high school students, and reaches over half a million underserved students through its Teacher Enrichment Program and STEM Lyceums.

“The Center’s amazing alumni and their significant contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) initiatives are helping to assure future U.S. leadership in the global community,” said DiGennaro.

About the Center for Excellence in Education

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center’s mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI), USA Biolympiad (USABO), Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), and STEM Lyceums. CEE programs are provided cost-free to participating students and teachers. All CEE programs are offered cost-free to students and teachers, thereby leveling the playing field for economically disadvantaged students.
