New CEE Webinar Series to Explore STEM in the Real World

McLean, Va. (October 5, 2021) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announces that CEE’s Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP) is hosting a new monthly series of free “The Square Root of STEM” webinars focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics on the second Tuesday of the month from 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET.

“This exciting new webinar series will explore STEM topics and skills that intersect with our daily lives,” said CEE’s President Joann DiGennaro. “It will illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of STEM and provide real-world applications of STEM skills.”

Webinar topics will include disease sniffing dogs, space engineering, the science of sports, agriculture, technology, and more. Educators, students, and the public are invited to register for the webinars.  

The first webinar in the series, “Super Snouts: The Olfactory Excellence of Man’s Best Friend,” is on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET. Learn about the science behind detection dogs, the canine olfactory system, and the animal husbandry behind training and caring for detection dogs.

The webinar features Dr. Cynthia Otto, Director of the Working Dog Center, University of Pennsylvania. She received her PhD (Veterinary Physiology) from the University of Georgia and a DVM (Veterinary Medicine) from The Ohio State University. Her current research interests are focused on the health, genetic and behavioral aspects of performance in detection dogs. She is the recipient of the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation’s 2021 Asa Mays, DMV Excellence in Canine Health Research Award.

The webinar will also feature guest speakers from Transportation Security Administration (TSA): Andrew Hotinger, TSA Headquarters Canine Coordinator and Alex Reeb, TSA Instruction Systems Specialist.
