New STEM Lyceums Webinar on STEM College Experiences

CEE offers exciting free virtual STEM Lyceums program for high school students.

McLean, Va. (September 8, 2023) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is offering high school students “Insight to College,” a cost-free opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) college experiences and standout applications on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 4:30-5:45 p.m. ET. Distinguished speakers are:

Derek Chen is a rising sophomore at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying Computer Science and Biology. At MIT, he is involved with HMMT and MIT Science Olympiad, and he researches prime editing guide RNA design at the Liu Lab. This summer, he researched phononic crystal design at the Air Force Research Laboratory through the DoD-CEE Internship. In his free time, he enjoys running, doing Sporcle quizzes, and solving Rubiks Cubes. He is a 2021 and 2022 USA Biolympiad Gold Medalist and a 2021 International Biology Olympiad Silver Medalist.

Amber Luo is a New York native currently attending MIT pursuing a double major in computer science and applied math in the hopes of eventually pursuing a doctorate in computational biology. In 2022 she placed 3rd in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. Amber is enthusiastic about applying techniques from machine learning and data science to investigate real-world data, particularly in a biological context. On top of being a part of CEE’s Research Science Institute in 2021, she also was a USA Biolympiad finalist in 2021 and 2022.

Pedro Baiza Martinez is Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Virginia Tech. He oversees the Hispanic College Institute (HCI), Black College Institute (BSI), and Fall Visitation. Born in El Salvador, Pedro is a first-generation college graduate who earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from James Madison University and is currently completing a Master of Science in Leadership Studies at Virginia Tech.

This online seminar is part of CEE’s STEM Lyceums, a virtual club for high school students to learn about STEM professions and career pathways, provided at no cost to schools or students. Industry professionals share innovative research and offer unique learning experiences, internship opportunities, and scholarship offerings for STEM learners. Meetings foster critical thinking skills, encourage excitement for science, and prepare students to enter STEM careers.
